What should be done after a stone chip?
If grit is swirled up and a stone chip damages the windshield or side window, a car garage should be visited promptly so that the damage can be repaired. Our auto mechanics will do this quickly and efficiently using special resin and UV light. Vehicle owners who do not have the windshield replaced or repaired risk spreading the crack. In the worst case, the windshield cracks completely.
Can the windshield be repaired?
If there is a small stone chip in the windshield, it may be possible to repair the auto glass. Stone chips must be smaller than a two-franc piece (approximately 2.5 cm in diameter) to be eligible for repair. Stone chips located within the field of vision on the windshield may also be repaired. During the auto glass repair process, special resin is used to fill the cracks, but there is no guarantee that the resin will fully spread into the cracks. If the resin does not spread completely or fails to reach the smaller, compressed cracks, the windshield may still require replacement to prevent the crack from widening. The repair typically takes one hour and costs CHF 139.- (including VAT).
Is it mandatory to replace a special windshield?
Special windshields such as heated windshields or windshields with head-up display can be repaired. When repairing a windshield with a head-up display, there could be distortions in the graphic, and when repairing a heated car windshield, the heating wires could be damaged, if this were to happen, the windshield would need to be replaced.
When does the windshield need to be replaced?
The windshield must be replaced when the stone chip is too large (larger than a two-franc piece), when the windshield has a crack, and when the damage is on the edge of the windshield. In addition, the windshield must be replaced if the resin does not spread completely during the repair, if the heating wires break (in the case of a heated windshield) or if the graphics become distorted (in the case of a windshield with a head-up display).
When does the insurance pay?
The vehicle owner can report the damage to the insurance company and will be reimbursed for most of the costs. However, there is usually a deductible. Repair kits for stone chips are an emergency solution and should only be used if there is an acute risk of breakage and no auto repair shop is nearby.
