What's changing? What are the advantages of electric cars? Can combustion engines still be resold? What will change in EU countries? In this blog post, you'll learn more about the combustion engine ban.

What remains the same?

Existing gasoline and diesel engine cars are not affected by the ban. Used cars with combustion engines may continue to be sold after 2035.

What will change in EU countries from 2050 onwards?

As of 2035, a sales ban on new cars with gasoline and diesel engines is set to take effect. The ban applies only to new registrations. This decision was made by the European Union Parliament on June 8th, 2022.

What will change in EU countries from 2050 onwards?

The EU aims to achieve complete CO₂ neutrality. By 2050, the vehicle fleet is expected to consist largely of electric vehicles that can be powered by renewable energy. Gasoline and diesel engines are likely to be banned. The exact means of enforcing this change are still unclear. Only electric or hydrogen propulsion systems are expected to be sold.

Will the sales ban also affect Switzerland?

Since Switzerland is not a member of the EU, it is not obliged to adhere to the ban decided by the European Parliament. However, since new cars sold in Switzerland already comply with CO2 emission regulations, fossil-fuel-powered new cars are likely to disappear from Swiss roads as well. Additionally, it is highly unlikely that European car manufacturers will produce combustion engines for such a small market like Switzerland.

Who will be affected by these changes?

Since the decision does not affect trucks, cargo and cruise ships, as well as airplanes, only drivers with a category B driver's license are affected. Used cars (gasoline and diesel vehicles) may still be resold from the year 2035 onwards. Only the manufacture of gasoline and diesel new cars will be prohibited. There is also no ban for motorcycles.
