DAB stands for Digital Audio Broadcasting. It's a digital transmission standard for radio reception on frequencies between 30 MHz and 3 GHz. The standard has been around since the turn of the millennium, but only now is it becoming so widespread that conventional frequencies (FM radio) are gradually being phased out. Starting from 2020, Switzerland is completely transitioning to the new digital radio. This means: Even in your car, you'll need a DAB radio.
What are the advantages of a DAB car radio?
With the nationwide transition to DAB, digital radio in cars is practically indispensable from 2020 onwards - otherwise, you can only listen to shortwave, medium wave, and long wave if your car radio even receives these frequencies. That would be a step back to the Middle Ages of broadcasting. Therefore, DAB radio is no longer the 'radio of the future' but rather the radio of the present.
Advantages of DAB car radio:
- Interference-free reception
- A wide range of regional and nationwide channels
- Almost seamless coverage along Swiss highways as well as throughout Europe
- Automatic station search
- Program-related additional information (weather, detailed traffic data, song title and artist, current news headlines)
Also, DAB radio is received free of charge (like conventional radio) - unlike expensive streaming subscriptions.
Which car radios need to be upgraded to receive DAB?
Basically, all car radios that are not DAB+ compatible need to be replaced from 2020 onwards. You can check your driver's manual to see if your car is already equipped with a digital radio. This is typically only the case if you purchased it as a new car around 2018 or possibly a bit earlier. If not, let us handle the upgrade for you.
