New traffic and driver's license regulations will apply from January 1st, 2021. Auto Müller refers to the website of the Federal Roads Office (Astra).

There are new developments in the following areas:

  • Motorized traffic

  • Slow traffic

  • Stationary traffic

  • New driving license regulations

Motorized traffic

Zipper system:

The zipper system is now mandatory when removing lanes. Wherever lanes end, for example when changing from three to two lanes, in the event of accidents or roadworks. Every road user must allow a road user from the removed lane to merge into the continuing lane in front of them according to the zipper principle, i.e. everyone must allow vehicles from the removed lane to merge in. The same applies to highway entrances; the car may drive to the end of the lane and then move into the lane. However, drivers who are turning into the lane are not allowed to force the gap; they are still required to give way. Failure to observe this rule will result in a fine.

Rescue lane:

A rescue lane must always be formed for emergency vehicles when traffic is only moving at walking speed, even if no emergency vehicle is visible. This emergency lane must remain in place until traffic is flowing again. On two-lane roads, the emergency lane must be formed in the middle between the two lanes; on three-lane roads, it must always be formed between the leftmost and middle lanes, i.e. one lane on the left and two lanes on the right. The emergency lane should remain free. Failure to observe the emergency lane is also punishable by a fine.

Passing on the right:

The right-hand driving rule still applies on freeways. However, if a convoy has formed on the left-hand lane or, in the case of three-lane freeways, on the left-hand and/or middle lane, road users will be allowed to pass in the right-hand lane from January 1, 2021, even if no convoy has formed there yet. Overtaking on the right is still prohibited and will be punished with a fine.

Speed increase for trailer combinations:

Anyone towing a trailer with a car or van may now drive at a maximum speed of 100 km/h on freeways. The trailer may still not weigh more than 3.5 tons and must be suitable for this speed, just like the towing vehicle and the tires.

Slow traffic

Turning right at traffic lights:

Cyclists and moped riders are now allowed to turn right at red traffic lights if this is indicated on a sign with a yellow bicycle and a yellow arrow. Attention must be paid to pedestrians and cross traffic, as they have right of way. Red is also valid for bicycles and mopeds if nothing is signaled at a traffic light.

Bicycle on the sidewalk:

If there is no cycle path or cycle lane, children up to the age of 12 may use the sidewalk on their bicycles. Pedestrians have right of way.

Bicycle lanes:

Cycle lanes can now be set up in 30 km/h zones. Vehicles on cycle lanes have right of way over merging roads. Accordingly, "Stop" or "No right of way" is signaled on the roads leading into the cycle lane. Yellow bicycle pictograms on the ground can indicate a cycle lane. The 30 km/h speed limit still applies..

Stationary traffic

Charging station symbol:

The "charging station" symbol has now been created for stationary traffic. Parking spaces are marked with this symbol if they have a charging station for electric vehicles. To make charging stations for electric vehicles easier to find, parking spaces can now be colored green.

New driving license regulations

Learning trips from the age of 17:

Everyone must now complete a learning phase of twelve months if they wish to obtain a learner's license for passenger vehicles before the age of 20. The learner's permit may already be issued at the age of 17. The twelve-month learning phase does not apply to persons who acquire their learner's permit after their 20th birthday. Persons born in 2003 only have to go through the twelve-month learning phase if the learner's permit was not obtained until 2022 or later.

No more direct access for motorcyclists:

Direct entry into the more powerful motorcycle categories is now only possible for people who are professionally dependent on driving such motorcycles: Motorcycle mechanics, police officers and traffic experts. In future, anyone wishing to ride the most powerful motorcycles must first ride a category A motorcycle limited to 35 kW for at least two years.
