V-BELT CHANGE
What is the V-belt?
The V-ribbed belt plays a crucial role in the proper functioning of the engine. Made of a rubber-fabric mixture, it transfers the engine power to auxiliary units such as the water pump, alternator, and power steering pump. Typically, it performs its tasks reliably for an extended period without any issues or drawing attention.
When and why does the V-ribbed belt need to be replaced?
Unfortunately, it is not possible to say exactly how long the V-belt will last. It should be replaced approximately every 80,000 km – 100,000 km or every 8 years. It is subject to a certain amount of wear, which can cause the rubber to become brittle and possibly even tear. The auxiliary units are then no longer driven.
What does the V-ribbed belt do?
It regulates the temperature in the vehicle through the driven air-conditioning compressor. It assists steering through the power steering system. It prevents engine overheating thanks to the driven water pump, which circulates the coolant.
How do I notice the imminent end of the V-belt?
When starting the engine and accelerating the speed up, you will hear a squealing sound from the engine compartment. A defective V-belt can also be detected by the diminishing light. In addition, it could be that the engine is getting very hot.
What happens if the belt is damaged or suddenly breaks?
Normally, the V-belt does not break. First, all driven auxiliary units such as the alternator, the power steering pump and the water pump fail. When the alternator fails, the car’s main power source (the generator) fails, and no power is generated for the on-board electrical system or the battery. When the power steering pump fails, the steering may be more sluggish. Since the V-ribbed belt drives the water pump, the broken belt could be responsible for engine overheating.
