New traffic regulations and safety standards in 2024

Discover the latest developments in Swiss road traffic for the year 2024. The Federal Roads Office (Astra) has announced important changes affecting various aspects:

Traffic medical examinations

  • From March 1, 2024, a separate eye test will no longer be required if you already hold a learner’s permit or driver’s license and wish to acquire a new category of permit.
  • People who wish to acquire a category of license on a professional basis will now also have their eyesight checked during the road medical examination.
  • For applicants aged 75 and over who are applying for a learner’s permit or driving license for the first time, a medical examination is mandatory.

Withdrawal of driving license

  • From March 1, 2024, it will no longer be possible to issue a category of driving license that would also have been withdrawn if it had been acquired previously.

Vehicle registration

  • Passenger cars or delivery vans that exceed a certain CO2 target must be penalized before they are registered for the first time. This will now be levied by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) from January 1, 2024.

Practical driving test

  • From March 1, 2024, the practical tests for categories A and B must take place on public transport for at least 45 minutes.

New safety standards for vehicles

  • From April 1, 2024, new vehicles must be equipped with an accident data recorder and modern driver assistance systems in accordance with European registration regulations.

Safety improvements for e-bikes

  • From April 1, 2024, all fast e-bikes (pedal assistance up to 45 km/h) must be equipped with a speedometer to ensure compliance with speed limits in 20 km/h and 30 km/h zones. Existing vehicles must be retrofitted by April 1, 2027.
